Where do I Come From??
Someone else's blog made me think about this tonight. Where do I come from? I was born & raised in Waterloo (ok, actually born in a hospital in Kitchener, but that's right next door, and I've always lived in Waterloo!) My parents are also from Waterloo. My grandparents are from elsewhere in Ontario. In fact, it was my great-great-great-grandparents who immigrated to Canada, from Germany, France & Wales. So I call myself Canadian. I am Canadian. Which I'm very proud of.
However, at the same time, I often find that boring. Several of my friends are either from other countries, or it was their parents or grandparents who came from other countries. And they all know stories of how their ancestors came to where they are. But my family - nobody actually seems to know. I wish I did know. I think it'd be interesting to know. But I doubt I'll ever know.

Since coming to Hong Kong, I've come to realize that being "simply Canadian" is a great thing. It's great being able to claim the diversity of my friend's backgrounds, while at the same time knowing they're Canadian.
