Fishfest last weekend...Saturday story

This one's pretty long...but interesting. Some strange events that day :P

Saturday morning, I wanted to get up to see the results of the children’s sand sculpture contest at 10am, but no did do. I woke up at 6:30 to go to the bathroom, and Kat woke up too & left to go home to shower/change, etc, although she ended up going back to sleep. I had a bit of a headache, but wasn’t too bad. Dozed till about 8:30am, when my stomach didn’t feel great. After a bunch of diarrhea & puking up orange juice, I felt better (sorry for that TMI)

Kat came over eventually, and she & I left around 12:30pm, b/c we wanted to see stuff at 1pm, but we went to see if Neil was working at the theatre (as he volunteers there and said he was in that day…we also felt bad about the night before) But no such luck. So we headed to the pier to see the Tote Races followed by the Tug-Pull Challenge (the latter was apparently the Thing To See!) The Tote Races were cool, where a pair of people were put into a large plastic tub, and they raced to paddle themselves out around a buoy & back. It was funny – especially the last one, which was one couple against another couple (the girls in each couple were sisters) They went after each other, to try to knock the others out of the boat. All 4 people ended up in the water, then ended up swimming & pulling their tub to the finish line. I think it ended up in a tie. Unfortunately the Tug-Pull Challenge was cancelled :S

We went over to the Molson Beach Tent (& bar, but no alky for us at that time!) where we saw a little bit of “Jake” who was a children’s entertainer. It was alright…but definitely a kids show! We decided we were getting hungry, so we hit to the Fish Fry, put on by a local fish place - $5 for a HUGE plate of fish & chips. Twas tasty! I had wanted fish, seeing as it WAS FishFest! The lady who served us recognized us from us sampling the wine the night before, so we chatted to her for a bit. It’s funny how people recognize you more quickly in a small town. We took our food over to the Molson Beach Tent A band “Summerfield” was playing – they did a lot of covers of artists such as REM, Tom Petty, Melissa Etheridge, and others. They did a different version of REM’s “Losing my Religion” which I personally thought was cool, but Kat didn’t like it. Oh well. I enjoyed them – their usual lead singer was a guy, but the only girl in the band sang a few songs, and I thought she had an awesome voice. I really enjoyed their set, especially since I could sing along to most of the songs, but Kat wasn’t as thrilled. Meh.

In the middle of the set, they had the Molson “Bathing Brutes & Beauties” Contest. There was a females category, a males category & a partners category. Highlights were in the partners competition, they had to blow up those long balloons & make an animal, but nobody could blow them up, so they made the animals out of the deflated balloons. One couple made a “snail with balls” – but they were told it was a family show, so it was a “well endowed snail.” Then they had to do something creative with the balloons, and bonus points if they did it as partners. Other competitions in this contest (each category group did 3) were dancing, talent, and others. One interesting one was where they had to go out in the audience and grab as much clothing as they could from people, and wear it. The best part of that one was the one man in the partners category who wore a skirt & blouse! The girls also had one where they had to walk around with a cup of water balanced on their head. The end of each category had a hula hoop competition. Overall, the entire competition was pretty amusing! Summerfield took the stage again.

Giselle (the one selling naked postcards from the day before) had been around again, and was wearing a bikini top & short shorts which were not zipped up, but you didn’t see anything. However, at one point, she took her shorts off, and was wearing just a g-string (and her top), and she was dancing with a 60-year-old man in a Speedo thong. *shudders* It was pretty bad. I whispered to Kat that since they had said it a couple times during the Brutes & Beauties contest that someone should tell those two that it’s a family show! I wasn’t offended by seeing them or anything, but I’m sure some people might have been.

After Summerfield was done, we decided to head back to my place to chill, and we watched some tv, then ended up both napping for an hour. Which was good…neither of us slept much the night before, and we were both tired. I think that made the night more enjoyable. We got up then, went to Tim Horton’s for a quick bite to eat, and went back to the stage. Kat wasn’t drinking that night, and to avoid the expensive drinks there, I took a bottle of Peach Schnapps & Mango Cocktail with me. I love small towns – they didn’t check our bags at all! Hehe. There was a guy on stage with his acoustic guitar – name was Richard something. He was pretty cool – Kat loved him, b/c he did Dashboard Confessional, and he was Emo. He sounded good, but I didn’t know any of the songs he did.

After Richard, it started to rain. And pour. For about 30-45 minutes. It almost looked like it might be cancelled – but the sound guys did a good job with covering up everything, and making the show go on eventually. But during the rain, we were all under the covering. And this is where you really notice that ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE in this town smokes. That’s what I get for living in the middle of tobacco country (where there’s still not a no-smoking by-law like most of Ontario) Ick.

Once the rain cleared, the “Joys” (formerly Pop Joy) took the stage for the remainder of the evening. We were in the first couple rows for it. They fuckin rocked! A small Indie group from London Ontario, with the lead singer being a female, they were totally awesome. She was crazy, and it was just a fun fun show! They did some of their own music, and did a bunch of covers of Nirvana, Green Day, Offspring, and so many other bands that I can’t remember. The drummer was pretty damn cool too.

During the show, the lead singer (Sarah) was complaining about being worried about 2 things. One was her bra, how she thought it was ok in the dressing room, but now she’s worried about her tits falling out b/c she doesn’t have any! Her other problem was that the stage was all full of sand & water, so she was worried about falling on her ass. She asks “if I fall on my ass with my tits hanging out, will you guys help?” And the crowd screams in agreement, and she says “alright, then I’ll go FUCKIN CRAZY then!” And she did! :D

Another part of the show, Sarah asks if there’s any girls in the audience who want to flash the audience. So 3 girls go up on stage, and flash for 5 seconds. The one girl who went up looked about 16 – it was a 19+ show, but they didn’t check anyone at the door (well, I’m sure that if there was some 12-year-old they woulda kicked them out, but no one else)

During the show, there was apparently some guy who kept trying to touch Kat – I’m not sure where, but she definitely likes her personal space. We headed to the drink counter later (since Kat knew the one woman selling tickets earlier, and gave us free water coupons) and this guy followed or something, and randomly says to Kat “You want to go for a beer?” I didn’t see this, but then Kat yells to me “Hey Jill, you want to go for a beer?” and I say “I’m always good for beer!” Which I think was the wrong answer, but oh well. But he had a beer, so we talked to him there for a bit. I thought Kat knew him since he asked us for beer, but no, I figured she didn’t when she finally introduced herself to him. His name’s Troy, he just finished his CS & electronics degree at Laurier, and now wants to go for his B.Ed. Oh man, he was a stereotypical CS guy though – not too many social skills. He was there with his dad, who at first he didn’t where he was, but he didn’t care much. Then his dad walked by, and shook Troy’s hand saying “See ya later son.” Kat joked later that his Dad’s going to be all questioning, like “So you were talking to girls eh? Who were they? Did you get their numbers?” LOL

So Troy finished his beer, then we headed to the Norfolk Tavern. On the way, Troy asks Kat “So, are you two going to be able to get in?” Grr. He also thought we were 18! There was a line at the Norfolk, and Kat was talking to the guys behind us a bit, who were apparently pretty fun. When we got there, only 2 of us could get in (they were *that* strict about keeping their capacity) So Kat pushed us in, and talked to the guys behind her. They apparently asked her if she had a fake ID. Geez Loueez! What’s with these people thinking we’re so young? Kat came in eventually, and Troy bought me a beer & Kat an iced tea. I felt bad though – Kat couldn’t hear my convo with Troy, but I didn’t want to ignore him since he bought me beer. She basically rocked out to the music then. Troy went to the bathroom at one point, and leaned to talk to us, and just started rubbing my back while doing so. Weird, but I don’t have the personal space bubble as much as Kat, so didn’t really bother me. Whatever. I can deal. When he got back, we went closer to the band for awhile, then they took a break, and we were tired (and done our beer!) so we headed home. Troy went the opposite way to us, so we said good-bye. And that was the end of that. Got home, Kat drove back to her place, and I took a shower (super-gross from sweat & sand!) and went to bed. Fun fun night!
